The Importance of Swim Safety

Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death in the U.S. for children ages one to four, highlighting the importance of teaching children swimming and water survival skills.

Research shows that just a single month of formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning in children by 88 percent.

“Swimming is much more than a great workout,” says Dawn Bourgeois, Create Heathy Wellness Center director. “It’s a valuable life skill that helps keep children safe and gives parents and guardians peace of mind, especially during the summer, when families spend more time around water.”

In addition to reducing the risk of fatal drowning accidents, swimming lessons and classes help prevent non-fatal drowning injuries. Almost 40 percent of drownings treated in an emergency department require further hospitalization, and drowning injuries can cause serious brain damage and even long-term disabilities.
