What the Scale Can’t Tell You: InBody Testing at The Create Healthy Wellness Center
By Kim Thornton, RDN, LD, CDE, ACE
Registered Dietitian, Create Healthy Wellness Center
If you’ve ever stepped on a scale and felt confused by the number, you’re in good company.
Maybe you’ve been walking more, lifting weights, eating more protein, or getting back into a routine after surgery or rehab. Maybe your clothes fit differently, or you feel stronger, but the scale barely moves. Or maybe the number has gone down, but you’re not sure what kind of weight you’re losing.
That can be frustrating. It can also make it hard to know what to do next.
At the Create Healthy Wellness Center, we now offer InBody Testing to give people a clearer picture of their body composition. The test helps show what the scale can’t: how much of your body is muscle, fat, and water, and how those numbers can guide your health, nutrition, and fitness goals.
This service is available to Wellness Center members and non-members. You don’t have to be a member to schedule a test, consultation, or nutrition counseling appointment.
A Better Way to Understand Progress
Here in the Hill Country, people come to the Wellness Center with all kinds of goals. Some want to build strength so they can keep up with their grandkids. Some are recovering from an injury or surgery and want to stay active safely. Some are working on heart health, balance, weight management, or simply feeling better in their day-to-day life.
Those goals deserve better information than weight alone.
InBody Testing gives us a detailed look at body composition, including body fat mass, lean body mass, water balance, visceral fat, segmental muscle analysis, segmental fat analysis, and phase angle readings.
That may sound like a lot of technical information, but we’ll walk through it together in plain language during your consultation. My goal is to help you understand what your results mean and how you can use them in real life.
For example, your results can show how much muscle mass you have in your arms, legs, and trunk. That can be helpful if you’re working with a trainer, returning to exercise, or trying to build strength more evenly.
Your results can also show visceral fat, which is fat stored deeper in the body around the organs. This is one of the reasons body compositions can be so helpful. It helps us look at health in a more meaningful way than appearance or weight alone.
Why Muscle Matters
One of the most important things we look at is muscle mass.
Muscle supports strength, balance, metabolism, mobility, and independence. As we age, maintaining muscle becomes even more important. It affects how we move, how we recover, and how well we can keep doing the things we enjoy.
Sometimes people lose weight and feel excited about the number, but some of that loss may come from muscle. Other times, people are building muscle and losing body fat, but the scale doesn’t change much. Without body composition testing, that kind of progress can be easy to miss.
InBody Testing helps us see a fuller picture. From there, we can talk about realistic goals, protein needs, exercise, nutrition, and next steps that make sense for your body and your life.
What to Expect
The InBody Testing process is simple.
Your first appointment is the test itself, which takes about 30 minutes. During that visit, we’ll make sure you’re prepared, complete the body composition scan, help you set up the InBody app, and give you a printed copy of your results.
A few days later, you’ll come back for a 30-minute consultation. During that appointment, we’ll review your results together and talk about what they mean.
Your consultation may include personalized goals, heart rate guidance, protein intake recommendations, nutrition support, and fitness guidance based on your results. If you’re working with a trainer, your results can also be useful information to share as part of your fitness plan.
My goal is for you to leave with clear, practical next steps. You shouldn’t walk away feeling overwhelmed by numbers. You should walk away with a better understanding of your body and a plan that feels realistic.
